What is Indian car of the Year Award?
The Indian car of the Year Award (ICOTY) was constituted by a group of leading automobile journalist in 2005 to confer the award to the best new car launched in India every year. The experienced jury members are responsible for selecting the best car based on the criteria like price, fuel efficiency, comfort, safety, performance, innovations and suitability in driving on Indian road conditions. This award is also called the ‘Oscar’ award for the best car. It constituted on the theme of other awards like European Car of the Year, American car of the Year and the Japanese Car of the Year.
Who bagged the Indian car of the Year Award in the past?
The first Indian car of the Year Award was bagged by the best seller Maruti Suzuki Swift in 2006. Hyundai has won the award for the maximum five times till now followed by Maruti Suzuki which won it three times and the Honda won it twice. The following is the year wise winner of the ICOTY award.

Indian car of the Year Award (ICOTY) 2018
The Indian car of the Year Award (ICOTY) 2018 was awarded to Hyundai Verna at a glittering award ceremony held at Delhi on 13th December 2017. The award was handed over to Y K Koo, MD & CEO of Hyundai Motors India Ltd. by Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director, JK Tyre & Industries Limited on behalf of the Jury of ICOTY. The winner certificate signed by all the Jury Members of ICOTY was presented to Mr. Koo by the Chairman of the ICOTY Jury, Bob Rupani.
Dr. Raghupati Singhania while delivering his address after honoring Hyundai Verna with the award said that the award is synonymous with the excellence in Indian automobile industry and recognizes the company’s efforts in engineering, design, cost-effectiveness, adaptability to local conditions and the ultimate customer satisfaction. JK Tyre has been associated with the sponsoring of the ICOTY award since its inception.
Out of around 16 cars launched in India in 2017 which qualified for the award, 9 cars made to final. These are; Honda WR-V, Hyundai Verna, Jeep Compass, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Renault Captur, Skoda Kodiaq, Tata Nexon and Volkswagen Tiguan. In the very tough and neck to neck competition, Hyundai Verna scored highest points just by one and was declared the winner. Hyundai Verna scored 118 points to be the winner while the Maruti Suzuki Dezire was declared the runner up with 117 points. The Jeep Compass captured the third spot with 87 points.

Hyundai made the entry in Indian market with its popular Santro model in 1998 which became a wave after the then peoples’ car Maruti 800 of Maruti Suzuki. Today it has around nine models in the market like Eon, Grand i10, Elite i20, i20 Active, Xcent, Verna, Creta, Elantra amd Tucson. The popular Santro is again being launched as all-new Santro in the Indian market by mid 2018 and will also be displayed at the upcoming Auto Expo next month.
The J.D. Power 2017 Customer Service Index (Mass Market) Study also ranked Hyundai as the ‘Number One position in After Sales Customer Satisfaction.’
The awards like the ‘Indian car of the Year Award’ and ‘Number One position in After Sales Customer Satisfaction’ are indicative of Hyundai’s strength, quality, credibility and popularity as the country’s second largest car manufacturer and the top car exporter.
