Gone are the days when SUVs were considered as only for the higher income group of car buyers. With a range of SUVs launched of late, many middle class people buy SUVs as a family car. The SUV is the most attractive automotive body style in the world at this time and the same holds true in the Indian market too. With the likes of SUVs in different price ranges, from mini subcompact to luxury showing ever growing sales every year, it won’t be a surprise to see the Indian SUV market get a slew of launches in 2017. If you are considering to buy the Tata Hexa, I would suggest you to go for the automatic version because of its higher mileage and super smooth performance. Both the manual and automatic versions will be powered by a 2.2-ltire, 4-cylinder diesel engine which will pump out a whopping 157bhp of max power and 400Nm of peak torque. The Hexa can boast of the best interiors till date of all the Tata products. It will have features like touch screen infotainment, leather interiors and drive modes. Before the launch of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza , the SUV from Ford, the Ford Ecosport was the highest selling sub 4-meter SUV in India. Due to its high demand, there was a long wait period for the SUV for a long time. With a slew of new launches in the country, the Ford Ecosport is slightly getting old now and hence Ford has decided to launch the facelifted Ecosport in 2017. The new Ecosport would look a lot sharper than the current generation SUV. The new Ford Ecosport would also have a more aggressive face with a bigger grille, new headlamps, new tail lamps and quite obviously new alloy wheels. The interior will also look a lot refreshing with the touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Ford’s own mirror link. It would also be a lot spacious and comfortable. Features like a large touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and a panoramic roof are also expected.

The Honda WR-V will be Honda’s response to the sub 4-meter crossover segment. Though it is based on the Honda Jazz, the WR-V will be taking on the likes of the Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura . In all its likelihood the Honda WR-V will have an interior similar to the Honda Jazz . It would be powered by the same 1.2-litre iVTEC or 1.5-litre iDTEC engine that powers the Honda Jazz. The diesel variant will only get a manual gearbox option, while the petrol will also come mated with a CVT automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Expected to be priced between Rs 7.5-10 lakh, the Honda WR-V would be launched in the later part of 2017.
7. Datsun Go Cross
The Go Cross from Datsun is a crossover concept, based on the Go+ that was on display for the first time at the 2016 Auto Expo in India. The Datsun Go and the Datsun Go+ haven’t really kicked in the market the way Datsun may have expected. However, the Datsun Redi-GO, especially in it’s Sport variant with the plastic cladded cross-hatchback look has become a quite a favorite among Indian buyers. Now the Go Cross with its stance with the butch front end and compact dimensions is believed to come in production sometime mid-2017. It is expected that Datsun does move into a bit more premium category with the crossover and offers basic premium interior trim options like a touchscreen infotainment system with an inbuilt navigation setup. The Datsun Go Cross will compete against the likes of the KUV100 and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Ignis. It is likely that the same 1.2-litre petrol engine of the Go will be used. There is also a chance of the Datsun Go Cross getting a 1.5-litre D4-D diesel engine too.
8. Audi Q5
Audi’s one of the best-selling cars in India the Q5 has been around for a long while now. The SUV was due for a facelift, with recent launches like the Mercedes-Benz GLC to stay in the competition. Audi launched the updated Q5 much like a mini Q7 a few months ago. The new Q5 gets a 12-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster, with a large 8-inch free-standing screen for the MMI infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Expected to be launched sometime late in 2017, the new Audi Q5 will be a 5-seater SUV . Very likely the engines should be a 2.0-litre diesel with Quattro all-wheel-drive & an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a 2.0-litre petrol engine that will be a part of the Q7 range.

The Lexus RX will be the first product and the first SUV that Lexus India will launch when they kickstart their operations in a few weeks. The Lexus RX will have a go at the Q5/GLC/X3 but will be on the higher side as fasr as the price is concerned than its peers as it will be only available in the hybrid version RX450h spec. The RX will be available only in a five-seater layout. The combined hybrid and V6 engines make a whopping 300bhp of max power in the RX450. Lexus dealers in Delhi and Mumbai have already taken bookings for the Lexus RX and deliveries should begin once the official price announcements are made in a few weeks.
Finally Jeep made its entry to India in 2016. Though the current SUVs carry a big price tag, the Jeep plans to bring affordable SUVs in India in the later part of 2017. The Jeep has plans to manufacture the Jeep Compass in India itself. Hence the price would be comparatively lower. Recently the Jeep Compass was unveiled in Brazil and shares its mechanical specifications with the Renegade compact SUV. The Jeep Compass will get both diesel and petrol engines from the word go but it is not sure whether a manual gearbox will make it to India or not. It is expected that the Compass will offer both a lower variant in two-wheel-drive and higher one in four-wheel-drive with terrain response.
