The Mercedes C-Class is undoubtedly a top selling Merc internationally. However, in India, its the E-Class that makes it to the top on the sales charts. Of late, Mercedes has already started testing the new E in India. It has been seen a couple of times in the long wheelbase guise. The India launch of the new E-Class is expected to take place by March’ 2017.
On the basis of some reliable sources, Mercedes-Benz will be launching only the long wheelbase version of the E-Class in India. This would certainly mean that the new E class will be slightly more expensive than its rivals. However, it will suit the needs of most Indian buyers who prefer their luxury cars to be chauffeur driven.

Its quite obvious that the new model Mercedes E Class will be more expensive than the current car. It is expected that there would be a price hike of at least Rs. 5 lakh. The long wheelbase version will touch almost a whopping Rs. 80 lakhs on road! However, proper localization levels can make the cost cut down to around Rs. 60-70 lakh.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is most likely to come with a diesel and a petrol engine option in India. The petrol engine would be a 2.0 L turbo which would pump out 241 PS of max power and 370 Nm of peak torque. The other engine option – the 3.0 L Diesel would churn out 258 PS of max power and 620 Nm. Both the engines would come mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission system.

The E-Class L is comparatively longer than the standard one by about 140 mm. This results in an increase in legroom by almost 135 mm. As of now, Mercedes sells the E LWB in only the Chinese market which is a left hand drive market. Mercedes had to put in considerable amount of time and effort in developing a right hand drive version for India.

The new 2017 E-Class would have the same design concept as the current S-Class and C-Class sedans. It features the same look as the Mercedes family with the slightly protruding front grille. The headlamps and tail lamps would come as full LED units. India will get the long wheelbase version of the E-Class, which will be a first in India. Though the design would be primarily the same as the short wheelbase model, there would be a visible difference in design in between the B-pillar and the tail. For the E-Class L, the window area would extend behind the door. Due to the increased length, the rear door is different in profile. It doesn’t curve around the rear wheel arch as much.
Apart from the increase in legroom, the interiors remain pretty much the same. The dashboard design is inspired from the S Class. There would be a fully digital instrument cluster along with a touchscreen system for the COMAND interface. As expected from Mercedes, the cabin would be loaded with technology and features. The rear seat of the E-Class L would be an ideal one for those who prefer being driven by a chauffeur.
