The petrol variant of the Ameo is low on power as well as torque. That said, the 1.5 diesel engine which powers the Ameo is way ahead of the Dzire’s 1.3 L unit. It also comes equipped with Volkswagen’s slick 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. On the other hand the Dzire lets buyers choose between a 5-speed AMT and a 5-speed manual. Volkswagen Ameo petrol does not come with a automatic transmission option.

|Diesel||26-27 KMPL||21.73 KMPL/21.66 KMPL|
|Petrol||20-21 KMPL||17.83 KMPL|
Due to the low kerb weight of the new Dzire, it should be even more fuel efficient than the model it replaces. The claimed mileage could easily touch 27 KMPL for the diesel variant. Coming to the ARAI certified mileage figures, the Ameo has a clear disadvantage. That said, the real world figures depend a lot upon an individual’s driving style so, they might be closer.

New 2017 Maruti Dzire vs Volkswagen Ameo – Design Comparison
Both the compact sedans have very contrasting design traits. The new Dzire features curvy lines all over. On the other hand, the Ameo is all straight sharp cuts. Though the front end of the Dzire resembles the upcoming Swift, Maruti has done a great job to set the Dzire apart. Because the development of the new Dzire took place alongside the new Swift, the designers had the privilege to better integrate the boot into the hatchback’s design. On the same lines, Volkswagen too has done a decent job of integrating the boot into the Polo hatchback, but it isn’t as seamless as the Dzire, or the Vento for that matter.
Much like the exteriors, the interiors of the Dzire are also quite different from that of the Swift. It boasts of a sport flat-bottom steering wheel. The centre console is very much tilted towards the driver, which makes the cabin very driver centric. The Ameo also gets a flat bottom steering wheel, which without the faux wood insert looks much more sporty. Volkswagen Ameo features very high levels of quality and fit & finish.

New 2017 Maruti Dzire vs Volkswagen Ameo – Verdict
The Ameo does pretty well in almost all aspects. Its quite a fun to drive car, especially when it comes to the 1.5 L Diesel. Dzire’s AMT gearbox does not fare well against the Volkswagen’s dual clutch DSG transmission. However, Volkswagen can’t quite compete with the kind of trust Indian car buyers have in Maruti Suzuki. Not as of now, at least.
- Price – The entry level trims of the Dzire and Ameo could cost the same whereas the top end automatic diesel variant of the Ameo is expensive.
- Specifications – The Ameo scores higher in terms of performance from the diesel motor. On the other hand it is the Dzire’s 1.2 L petrol that is better in terms of specifications.
- Features – Maruti Dzire has slightly more features than the Volkswagen Ameo. Both cars have dual front airbags and ABS as standard.
- Design – The new Dzire definitely looks better than before and and more premiere too. That said, the Ameo is one of the better looking compact sedans out there.
